SARNIA – Putting out an album during a pandemic isn’t what Emm Gyrner originally planned when she decided a few years ago to make a jazz record as a present for her dad.
Just For You, an album of jazz standards, plus two original songs, was largely recorded before COVID-19 arrived and is officially out Friday on Gryner’s own label.
The singer-songwriter grew up outside of Camlachie, near Sarnia, before studying music recording at Fanshawe College and beginning a career that took her around the world before she settled back close to home in Southwestern Ontario.
She has released about 20 albums that have earned her Juno nominations, critical acclaim and experiences that include touring as a member of David Bowie’s band and helping an astronaut record a song in space.
New experiences have also come along with her latest album.
“I was saying to my dad, when you pick a new genre to do, it’s actually kind of refreshing,” Gryner said. “There are new radio stations to talk to and new people to meet in the jazz world.”
Her journey to jazz began early but took
