On his second album the 21-year-old Hertfordshire singer once again holds up a mirror to society and its dealings with and expectations of youth. McKenna’s relish for knotty narratives and huge melodies was apparent from the start of his career. Zeros is positively bursting with examples. It is also startlingly indebted, notably to Bowie circa Hunky Dory/Ziggy Stardust (Be an Astronaut, in particular, sails dangerously close to the wind). Clearly a Big Music disciple, McKenna turns the volume and textures to max on vast, widescreen songs such as You Better Believe!!! and Daniel, You’re Still a Child.
